Item Description: | Two columns. Woodblock initials and illustrations including of the Tower of Babylon, Rome and London. Multiple notes in ink on front fly-leaf. Colophon cc7r: 'Here endeth this present Cronycle of Englonde with [tha]t fruyte of tymes. compyled in a booke/ and also enprynted by one some tyme scole mayster of saynt Albons/ uppon whoos soule god haue mercy. Amen. And newely in the yere of oure lorde god .M.CCCCC.ii. Enpry[n]ted in flete strete in [tha]t sygne of the son[n]e By me Wynkyn de Worde'. Colophon D3r: 'Here endeth the descrypcyon of Brytayne / the whiche conteyneth Englonde wales and Scotlonde/ and also bycause Irlonde is under the rule of Englynde and of olde tyme it hathe so contynued. therefore I haue sette the descrypcyon of the same after the sayd Brytayne/ whiche I haue taken out of Polycronycon. And bycause it is necessary too all Englysshmen to know the propretees co[m]modytees [and] meruaylles of the[m]. I wyllyam Caxton haue them sette fyrst in enpryynt accordynge to the translaco[n]n of Treuisa/ whiche atte request of the lorde Barkeley teanslated the boke of Polycronycon into Englysshe: fynysshed [and] enprynted in Flete strete in the syne of the sonne by me wynkyn de worde/ the yere of out lorde a.M.CCCCC.and.ii. mensis Mayus'. Device of de Worde on cc7v and D3v. Includes at end 'The descrypcyon of Englonde', 'The descrypcyon of Wales', The descrypcyon of Scotlonde' and The descrypcyon of Irlonde'. Inscriptions in English and Latin on recto of contemporary endpaper including: 'Caxton Chronicle Sometime Schoole Master of St. Albans .1483.' and references to John Major's De Gestis Scotorum and Cajus de Antiq[ue] Cant 'Cajus his Opinion seems most probable by the Conclusion of this Book'. Inscribed in an early hand on a1: 'Wyllyam Sethe'. 'Pope' has been crossed out throughout volume and replaced with 'byshoppe' in some cases. Manicules and some annotations including 'nota nota bene'. a1 has manuscript number 1, a2 manuscript number 2 and a3 manuscript number 3 written at end of page.
