POLE, Reginald Cardinal. Ad Henricum octavum Britannniae regem, pro ecclesiacticae unitatis defensione, libri quatuor - Ingolstadii: 1587. 8vo. pp. [xvi], 471. A fine copy in a remarkable 21st century calf binding with heavily gilt spine that aside from the marble end papers had the real look and feel of a contemporary binding. Leaking of some private documents is a practice with ancient antecedents and then as now frequently resulted in death and destruction. Reginald Pole, a grandson of George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence and thus a cousin of Henry VIII, had been asked by the King to formulate his opinions on Henry VIII's divorce and the issue of Papal supremacy. Pole came down emphatically on the Pope's side, a decision that was leaked and so angered Henry that he had Reginald's brother Sir Henry Pole executed for High Treason. If Henry had followed the Cardinal's advice he would not have had himself proclaimed Head of the Church in Ireland as well as England and the dissolution of the monasteries and the confiscation of their lands would not have taken place.
