Binding Note: | A magnificent set in a very handsome contemporary Irish red morocco binding (c.1782), broad gold-tooled borders, royal arms in the centre of each cover, royal cipher in corners of centre panel enclosed by fan design using a flame tool. Six gold-tooled bands and seven compartments, title on green label in the second, and dates on tan label in the fourth, the other five are golf tooled, with variation in the design. Marbled endleaves and gilt edges. A number of sets of these Irish Statutes of 1765 were bound by the same workshop. From a bill in the British Library, we know that Boulter Grierson was paid �37 4s. 4d.for the binding of one. The present set was bound in the same workshop. It is one of only three known sets surviving intact, the other two being a set in the British Library and a set from the Royal Library Windsor, presented by King George V to the Irish Free State in 1927. |
