Charles Robert Maturin, Bertram; or, The Castle of St. Aldobrand. A Tragedy, in Five Acts (London, 1816).

Bertram.jpg

The hit of the 1816 theatre season, Bertram was performed at the Drury Lane Theatre with the help of Sir Walter Scott, who prevailed on Lord Byron to consider the manuscript.

Its success led to the revelation of Maturin’s authorship of his first three novels, all originally published under a pseudonym.

A trip to London to be fêted as the author of Bertram was a disappointment, and Maturin returned to Ireland never to leave it again.
