8c. Joan Blaeu, Atlas maior: Asia, quæ est Geographiæ Blavianæ ... volumen decimum (Amsterdam, 1662)
Southern Ming Provinces
Joan Blaeu's Atlas maior was a compilation of his own works and that of other cartographers who had attempted to map the world. The map of China, Korea and Japan was sold to Blaeu by the Italian Jesuit missionary Martino Martini.
Upon Martini's arrival in 1643 he served the Ming Dynasty, however as the Ming Dynasty fell over the course of the decade, Martini began to serve the emerging Qing Dynasty. While the Qing dynasty expanded its influence, the Southern Ming Dynasty held on in the South and South-Eastern provinces shown by Blaeu in these maps.
