Daniel Plancius, Dissertatio de fide haereticis non servanda ex decreto concilij Constantiensis (Amsterdam, 1608)
The English poet John Donne (1572–1631) signed his books with the motto ‘Per Rachel ho seruito & non per Lea:’ and his name ‘J:Donne’. The motto consists of a line from the fourteenth-century Italian poet Petrarch. It is thought that for Donne, ‘Rachel’ represented the contemplative life and ‘Lea’, the active. This text is bound in limp vellum with eleven other pamphlets, all printed between 1602 and 1618. Other than notes on the back flyleaf and pastedown there are no annotations in this volume.
