Gabriel Biel, Super canone misse sum additioni (Lyon, 1527)
Biel (c.1420–95) was a German theologian and philosopher, and this book on ‘the Canon of the Mass’ deals with that portion of the mass in the Roman Rite which begins with the words ‘Te igitur’ after the holy hymn known as ‘Sanctus’. In this volume the depiction of the mass has been lightly crossed out, and the remnants of the writing above are now illegible, probably as a result of a deliberate attempt to erase it. The light defacing of the image of the mass might perhaps suggest that the reader was not a zealous supporter of religious reform, but did wish to observe the letter of the law, which frowned upon the Roman Catholic mass.
