Postcard from Roger Casement
Casement was an enthusiastic supporter of Irish industry.
On 5 August 1905, he wrote a quick note to his friend, Major Robert Berry, on this peat postcard.
It was made by the Celbridge Peat Paper Mills in Kildare. According to advertisements in the Irish Times in 1904, the postcards were ‘selling in the thousands’ and were popular with relatives abroad, who might want ‘a bit of the old country.’ The business was financially unsuccessful and closed in 1905.
