Letter from Roger Casement
Casement had a strong reaction to the Ulster crisis of 1914.
After the landing of guns by Unionists at Larne, he wrote to his closest friend, Richard Morten, berating the ‘impotency, indiscipline, lawlessness and inefficiency of the Army and its Heads.’
Casement was now disillusioned with the prospect of limited Home Rule for Ireland: ‘The [Home Rule] Bill may or may not pass — most of us don’t care a damn now.’
