‘Troops in Trinity College’, photograph from T.C.D. [Miscellany], June 1916
Trinity College Dublin was used as a staging ground for the British army during Easter Week.
This photograph shows Front Square thronged with troops, some of whom are lounging on the lawn.
The then Keeper of Marsh’s Library, Dr Newport J. D. White, taught theology at Trinity College and had rooms there. He was not pleased by the disruption to his routine, and he complained that soldiers billeted in his rooms stole ‘coal… a bucket, a clothes brush, my towels & dusters’.
