The upper cover is lavishly decorated in the Victorian manner. a narrow border shamrock roll encloses four red corner onlays, stamped in gold. Shamrock corner sprays in the centre panel. 'Gwendolen' ornately worked in brass, onlaid in the centre. A series of fillets and a chain roll on the lower cover. Broad, roll-tooled turn-ins, watered silk endleaves and gilt edges. Upper joint weak and corners a little rubbed, otherwise an extremely well preserved example of a sumptuous Victorian binding. |
