The panel is surrounded by elaborately tooled onlaid borders (one of these borders is in blue on the bottom cover). A panel is formed by four crosiers onlaid in terracotta; an outer panel is painted black. Sprays of gold-tooled shamrocks are used in the corners and on the four sides. The spine is flat and elaborately decorated. Black painted strap-work, with gold-tooled borders. The title on a red almond-shaped onlay; the author's name on a red shield. Signed at the foot of the spine. Red watered silk doublures, with broad gold-tooled turn ins, using crosiers on the sides and shamrocks in the corners. An exceptionally fine example of the work of Caldwell and of the period. |
