Item Description: | Item number 16, from the 'Memoires of Abraham Tessereau' v.2 Numbers 651-652 in ink at top of pages. Printed pages 55 and 56 only. Printed page numbers and the title "Etat Réformés en France" crossed out. Item 16 appears to be part of a letter addressed to the King, extracted from "Etat Réformés en France". What appears to be the beginning of the letter is written in manuscript on the last two pages of item 15 (pages 649-650), and the end of the letter is continued in manuscript on the first page of item 17 (page 653). These pages are taken from the book "Etat des reformés en France" by Claude Brousson published in La Haye, chez Barent Beeck, 1685. See also items 22, 24, 26, 28. Annotated on the top of the first page of the letter (a manuscript part at the end of item 15, p. 649) : "On rapporte la Requeste qui suit pour faire voir le traitement qu’on faisait aux pères et aux mères pour leur avoir enlevé leurs enfants et les avoir arracher à leurs maisons." Summary of the text: This letter addressed to the King speaks of a case of kidnapping of Protestant children. Parents are even asked to pay a sum for the education of their children in a Jesuit abbey. The son is convinced to convert or he and his father will be hanged. Legal procedures are initiated by the father but this leads to nothing, hence this petition to the attention of the King. |
